Why the merchandise keeps missing
Generic railway gifts fail for a reason worth naming. They are about railways in general, and hardly anyone is interested in railways in general. People are interested in a particular line, a particular class, a particular morning they got up at half four for. A gift about the category cannot reach any of that.
A photograph can, because somebody chose to take it. That is already a decision about what mattered, made by the person you are buying for or by somebody who was standing next to them.
Choosing from somebody else's pictures
This is the awkward part, and most gift guides skip it. You are going through a camera roll that isn't yours, looking for the one shot worth printing, and you probably can't ask.
Three things help. Look for the picture they took more than one of, because repetition means they were trying to get it right. Look for the day rather than the subject: a gala, a last day of service, a trip you were both on. And when two candidates are equally good, take the sharper one, because sharpness is the only thing that cannot be added later. Preparing the photograph covers what that actually means.
Match the format to the room, not the budget
The question that decides the format isn't what you want to spend. It's where the thing is going to live. A desk, a hallway, a workshop wall and a kitchen shelf want different objects, and a print that is wrong for its wall stays leaning against a skirting board for two years.
