What it physically is
The same stretched canvas as the unframed version, over a 2cm frame with softly coloured edges, set inside a wood moulding. There is no glazing, so nothing to reflect a window and nothing to shatter in the post.
The frame sits proud of the canvas rather than over it, so the picture is not cropped by the moulding the way a paper print is.
Sizes and frames
30x40, 40x50 and 50x70 cm. The moulding comes in three finishes: black, dark wood and natural wood. Black is the one that disappears and lets the picture do the work. Natural wood warms a print up and suits a sepia or an ink and wash. Dark wood sits between the two and is the safest choice against a busy wall.
Which photographs suit it
The same ones canvas suits, with one addition: because the moulding supplies its own edge, this format copes better with a picture that has something important near the border. The frame reads as the boundary, so the eye stops looking for one in the image.
The alternatives
